This just in:

San Diego State is following suit in political correctness with other universities across the country by dropping the word "foreign" from the general catalog's "Foreign Language Requirement."
Members of the Undergraduate Council, who drafted a rationale, in support of this initiative wrote: "The term 'foreign' has been used to designate something alien and is as ethnocentric and inappropriate as using 'oriental' to designate a person of Asian descent."

Okay, may I just take a moment to restrain myself from travelling over to San Deigo and giving the mother of all bitch slaps to this Undergraduate Council.
I mean, I already regarded political correctness as the most arrant load of stupidity I've seen in quite some time, but this really is taking the piss...

And now - a surprisingly calm, considered and moderate reply from Dave!

Yes, political correctness is a little daft. It can be explained when it is considered in terms of broadly-well-meaning people who aren't all that ineffectual and have risen past their level of competence within social organisations - they thus feel the need to be seen 'doing things' (so that their actual ineptness isn't exposed) but aren't 100% sure what, so they go with the least offensive-seeming option.

It should be noted that it could be worse. There are, after all, quite a lot of countries out there that still shoot people for using certain words (like "political criticism" if you live in North Korea).
