This just in:

San Diego State is following suit in political correctness with other universities across the country by dropping the word "foreign" from the general catalog's "Foreign Language Requirement."
Members of the Undergraduate Council, who drafted a rationale, in support of this initiative wrote: "The term 'foreign' has been used to designate something alien and is as ethnocentric and inappropriate as using 'oriental' to designate a person of Asian descent."

Okay, may I just take a moment to restrain myself from travelling over to San Deigo and giving the mother of all bitch slaps to this Undergraduate Council.
I mean, I already regarded political correctness as the most arrant load of stupidity I've seen in quite some time, but this really is taking the piss...

while political correctness can be a load of crap which seems to be there reasoning behind the cange, i do have to wonder if this means now people can take what would be considered "Native" langues to fullfill this requirments, while this would includge the langues of native amerricans it would also include that of american single langue which is a langue in it own right though in the past some institutions have not excepted it for the "forien langue requerment" ( partly becuase its not forien and partly because they try to denie that ASL is a true langue)

In general though, I find this sort of political correct name changing is all that happens. Nothing else really changes, and they go away, congratulating themselves on how everyone feels better now that those offensive words have been removed. The fact that no new courses along the lines that you mentioned are likely to be intoduced means that it just becomes another excerise in stupidity.

It's never too early.
Anywhere, any time any place, anyone.
We've got a similar P.C issue in Somerset. It's carnival time, and a friend of the family funs a carnival club. This year their float's theme was Black and white Minstrels. The volume of letters to complain to local papers is shocking. Correct me if I'm wrong, but can anything be racist if the negros don't actually care and it's not intended as racism? We just have a load of bored white people championing someone else's cause when they don't want it championed, just to relieve the boredom of a life on the Dole.
OK, there are a lot of stupid people in the UK too. Crap.

And now - a surprisingly calm, considered and moderate reply from Dave!

Yes, political correctness is a little daft. It can be explained when it is considered in terms of broadly-well-meaning people who aren't all that ineffectual and have risen past their level of competence within social organisations - they thus feel the need to be seen 'doing things' (so that their actual ineptness isn't exposed) but aren't 100% sure what, so they go with the least offensive-seeming option.

It should be noted that it could be worse. There are, after all, quite a lot of countries out there that still shoot people for using certain words (like "political criticism" if you live in North Korea).
