After being asked to return the archmage of the Mages Guild's staff that you stole, as part of a deal with the Thieves Guild, proceeding to do so, but steal everything else of value in the archmages house at the same time...
Funny thing is, most likely after the quest is done, and if the Sneak skill is high enough, you should be able to pickpocket the staff off the Archmage...
when playing fable, my friend craig would murder people in their homes at night during break ins, escape, and then buy up the house when there was a vacancy. then he'd rent it out at ruinous rates and repeat until he owned all the property in the towns he could. It got to the point where he could buy property entirely with the cost of rent that he charged with all the sutrrounding property.
