Where does the phrase "Holding a candle for someone" come from?

It comes from when the wives of sailors would sit in the windows of their houses holding candles so that their husbands could see the lights and find their ways home.
Not sure of the exact time period, but it was mainly for winter times when the blizzards could cause men to become lost easily. The lights would then guide them home.
