As an outsider, I sat for two hours in immigration. I had no idea why I was there. Everyone who worked there appeared to carry a firearm. That was a bit of a culture shock. Also, I remember being searched at every airport. I think I was searched because it was easier to search me because I spoke English and would be expected to shout about racism.
A cynical commentary for you: America is the one major Western "democracy" never to have had a signifcant domestic fascist movement, for one simple reason: it's never needed one. Authority fetishists get all they could possibly want and more in their day-to-day lives anyway.
I told you my country is quite unpleasant. davidnm has it right. We're quite fascist as a nation. Our government regulates morality, and uses law in ways that would make most people puke if they understood what was going on. Not to mention that the poor, disabled, and vulnerable members of our citizenry are preyed upon, not supported by the gov't. Don't move here.
