Swords and a distinct absence of sorcery
Dec. 2nd, 2004 08:58 amWell, last night was fun- I got to play with Hangar swords (basically, a short sword equivalent of the Mortuary sword). A lot faster than the broadswords I'd been using previously. And, as usual, I got a nice history lesson on the origins and usage of the weapon- apparently it was the sidearm-equivalent for pikemen and musketeers. Other amusing moments include someone casing the top third of one of the bastard swords to break and fly off. Wasn't his fault- there was a flaw in the blade, but he was actually managing to get sparks flying off his impacts on several occasions, so he wasn't exactly doing much to pull his blows...
Although I enjoy the sword work, I'm getting closer to the point of getting back to martial arts- the sword training emphasis is on theatrical and reenactment work, so things like deliberately telegraphing strikes and the like are what's taught, which goes against everything else I've done. But it's a fun diversion for the moment.
