Gaaaaah

Comp broke- some file or other went missing somehow- had to reinstall everything, lost all my emails, and don't yet have access to my taktix.org address.

Some might be recoverable, dunno yet...

Edit: For some reason, my browser scrolling has gone funny- the refresh is really low (I'm using Firefox). Any suggestions as to why?

More edit: Ah yes, installing newer graphics drivers might help...now if I can just remember what my card is...

lost all my emails

Was this before or after I sent you the one about the possible admin job here at the college? It isn't great, but if you get no joy on the stuff you've been applying for, it would tide you over for a few weeks...?

If needs be, I'll send it again

I got that one okay, thanks

What email client you using? I know it's not much use to you after the fact, but if you use Thunderbird there's a nifty little program called MozBackup which you can use to make backups of all yer emails and Thunderbird settings and passwords etc. Even encrypts it all in to one big file you can stick in a nice safe corner of yer harddrive. Also, it backs up Firefox profiles/bookmarks and whatnot. If you can't find it(it seemed somewhat elusive last time I googled for it, oddly..) then I can probably send you a copy. If yer not already using Thunderbird and are, for some perverse reason still using Outlook Express then now is the time to change. I always found OE particularly annoying from the point of view of not being able to make easy backups. Then of course there's the security "issues" and all the other irritating shit it forces on you.

But here's not the time and place for M$ bashing. I'm still a windows whore myself, after all, being somewhat too lazy to bother learning something new and interesting like linux. Not quite that much of a nerd, just yet.

I agree though. I's a major bummer when windows suddenly decides to break on you out of the blue. Personally I use a little known M$ program called TweakUI and use it to move my Desktop and My Documents folders over to a different partition from the system files, so they're nice and safe when the inevitable happens. Being the untidy sort of person I am, pretty much everything ends up on my Desktop at some point and I end up having to do period clear ups when all of a sudden there's isn't any more room for icons on there any more. Perhaps I should just get an even bigger monitor? If somebody would just buy me a nice 21" TFT..

Not sure how all this relates to XP though, because I'm still battling against the tides of eventual obsolence with Windows98SE.. Image

As for the slow refresh on Firefox, I think you're right - it's probably just the Graphics Card drivers. If you want to find out what your graphics card is, you can probably tell on Boot-up if you look really carefully when your PC turns on and it starts to count up your GFX card ram. To be honest, if you know whether or not it's ATI or GeForce - you can probably just download the driver package and it'll worry about which specific card it is for you.

Fortunately, I'd stored all the install disks in one place. Now, I just need to work out why Norton Internet Security won't install- I'm having to use an older version of Firewall and antivirus instead...

Norton has some conflict issues with other apps (though the only one I can think of of f the top of my head is McAfee, but there are more. Don't use an old one, you'll get new viruses posibly, use a free on till you figure Norton out (or just use it because it's free). Other possibility (though i am fairly sure it will be the gfx driver) is somooth scroll settings in firefox and your mouse scroll wheel settings in control panel.

I didn't know about that thunderbird thing and am off to look.

Hope you're well.
